    Nau dos Corvos

It's just you and the sea out here at Cabo Carvoeiro, 2.5km from town at the tip of the peninsula. As you gaze out at the Atlantic from the windy rooftop viewing platform, it's nice to know that under your feet is an excellent, upmarket seafood restaurant (Peniche's best). It boasts some of the best sunset views in Portugal.

    Taberna do Ganhão

This 'new-school tavern' is a reconstituted 'old-school tavern' where fishermen bought wine and groceries (plus it was the first in the area to have a telephone). The current owners have reinvigorated its spirit by maintaining its red-and-white-checked tables and elevated traditional daily plates (sweet and sour fried chicken on Tuesday, cuttlefish with garlic on Friday and so on).

    Os Americanos

There's no sugarcoating what's going down at this wildly popular restaurant inside Residencial Maciel II – an American couple (with Portuguese and Russian roots) satiate homesick crowds with mostly American-style classics (sirloin steak, chicken cordon bleu, lamb chops, duck breast) with occasional Italian and Portuguese flourishes. Ignore the distracting menu font – the food is solid, especially the fish specials (no bones!).

    Restaurante A Sardinha

Once a simple fishing tasca (tavern), this popular place was given a makeover a couple of years back, and boasts everything from gold and white painted chairs to designer lighting. But it hasn't lost what it does best: simply grilled fish and caldeirada (fish stew). Big portions, done decently.

    Restaurante Popular

This harbourside spot serves up good seafood. The tasty daily specials reflect what's been caught locally – the five types of espetados (skewers) of mixed fish are very tasty.
