    Clube Naval Praia da Assenta

Hidden down a steeply zigzagging road clinging to sea cliffs 14km north of Ericeira, this low-key find was opened by a family of fisher-folk in 1998. Punters line up for simply but fantastically prepared fresh catches such as sea bream, snapper, goldenfish, grouper, turbot, shrimp, cuttlefish (you name it, they might have caught it today!) barbecued over hot coals. Fantastic.

    Casa das Três

This barely larger than a hole-in-the-wall cafe is hyper-focused on its mission of bringing third wave java – single-origin Panamanian, Ethiopian, Costa Rican speciality coffees – to Ericeira, roasted by 7g near Porto. It succeeds. Great for a pre- or post-surf caffeine fix espresso or flat white from a mini La Marzocco (from €1.10).

    Mar das Latas

Ericeira's happening happy hour goes down on the sidewalk at this sophisticated bistro, which does well-curated wines and tapas with sunset sea views from the bar; and worthwhile, creatively approached Portuguese dining in the modern restaurant. Dishes such as Gomes de Sá pataniscas (cod fritters) and a grilled veggie moqueca reveal a daring but welcome desire to be different.

    Mar d’Areia

It keeps the decor simple – blue-checked tablecloths with starfish and lighthouses and tile designs of fish in nets à la the 1960s – and let the excellent grilled fish do the talking at this locally popular, family-friendly seafood eatery adjacent to the Mercado Municipal.

    Casa da Fernanda

For a sweet little treat, pop into this simple pastelaria for Ericeira's best ouriço – a small, muffin-like almond cake with a crusty top that hails from here. €0.95 well spent!

    Tik Tak

On a picturesque corner in the pedestrian zone, Tik Tak draws plenty of tourists and hip young locals to its open kitchen, jazzy music and tastefully eclectic interior. The varied Portuguese menu offers a break for those unmoved by Ericeira’s seafood fetish; there are more fresh vegetables than most other places, plus abundant nonfish options.

    Restaurante Prim

This casual but bright spot with outdoor seating dishes up high-quality, Brazilian-style grilled meats that smell of the wood stove, and potent caipirinhas. Side dishes such as rice and black beans make welcome alternatives to the ubiquitous Portuguese potato. The wine list is limited but has a good selection.

    Esplanada Furnas

As close to the sea as you can get without a boat, Furnas is all about freshly caught fish and spectacular ocean views. It’ll show you the catch of the day right as you enter and then barbecue your choice on the spot. The per-kilogram price on the chalkboard covers the fish plus a side of potatoes.
