Famous artists donate artworks for a secret Art on a Postcard auction in London

A secret auction is taking place today in London of over 400 postcard-sized artworks donated by international household names and emerging talent in the art world.

Members of the public have been viewing the artworks in person this week, at Maddox Gallery in Mayfair and online at Dreweatts & Bloomsbury Auctions, as the annual Art on a Postcard auction gets underway.

Established artists including Damien Hirst, Grayson Perry, Maggie Hambling, Oliver Jeffers, Peter Blake, Harland Miller, Gilbert & George, John Wragg RA, and Stephen Chambers RA have donated work. Also included are urban artists Ben Eine, Pure Evil and Inkie, and photographers Dougie Wallace and Rankin.

The identity of the artist of each piece will not be revealed until the auction has ended. This provides a unique opportunity for both established and budding art collectors to get their hands on original works from world-renowned artists.

Art on a Postcard raises money for the Hepatitis C Trust through this annual secret postcard auction and ‘postcard lotteries’ that occur throughout the year. Proceeds go towards the trust’s campaign to eliminate the virus as a major public health concern by 2030, and over £200,000 has been raised to date.

It has partnered with Dreweatts & Bloomsbury Auctions to do a live webcast auction on Thursday at 3 pm GMT, so it will be possible for those interested to watch the auction live as well as bid online.

According to Gemma Peppe, director of Art on A Postcard, the aim of the project was to create something that was truly inclusive and engaging, while also reflecting the UK’s current economic and political landscape.

“Small works of art are a symbol of the austerity we have been living through, economical for our artists to make and our audience to buy,” she says. “They are perfectly sized to fit easily onto the wall of a London apartment, and if none of the above, are great, collectable artworks in their own merit.”
