Places in Southern Dzongkhags

Destination

Gelephu

The large, but hardly bustling, border town of Gelephu is the gateway to south-central Bhutan. It's a pleasant enough town but is really just a place to overnight before leaving or entering Bhutan.

Destination

Sarpang Dzongkhag

Sarpang is on the southern border and a large part of the district is protected within the Royal Manas National Park, Phibsoo Wildlife Sanctuary and jigme Singye Wangchuck national park. Gelephu is the major town within the dzongkhag and is an important border town with India.

Destination

Zhemgang Dzongkhag

The highway south of Trongsa initially follows the Mangde Chhu river, winding in and out of various side valleys. The highway passes the numerous access roads leading to the complex Mangdechuu Hydrolelectric project before reaching the palaces of Kuenga Rabten and Eundu Chholing. From Eundu Chholing to Zhemgang is 61km.

Destination

Royal Manas National Park

After many years of being off-limits due to security concerns, this remote and enticing national park is open to visitors. The park and the practicalities of visiting is little known, even among many agents in Thimphu, and facilities are limited: only 39 foreigners trekked the 'eco-trail' from Gomphu to Panbang in 2014.
