Known locally as 'Lonny', Point Lonsdale is a laid-back coastal community of retirees, holidaymakers and sea-changers here to enjoy its relaxed way of life. Located 5km southwest of Queenscliff, 13km from Ocean Grove and 10 minutes from the wineries, it makes a good base from which to explore the Bellarine.
Its main street comprises rows of cafes across from the popular, family-friendly front beach. From the foreshore car park you can walk to the Rip View lookout to watch ships entering the Rip, to Point Lonsdale Pier and to the lighthouse. Along from here is the rugged 'back beach'; swimmers should stay between the flags.
Big housing developments are going up in the town's surroundings, which will make the area decidedly less sleepy than before.
