An architecture firm in the Czech Republic has created a simple and stunning small hotel design from three shipping containers that can be easily moved according to season.
Designed by Artikul architects, ContainHotel boasts five rooms that can accommodate a total of 13 guests. It consists of two 20-foot containers with one 40-foot-high cube container placed on top, with the bottom floor housing bathroom facilities, a technical room, a storeroom and a four-bed guest room, while the upstairs contains four rooms that are accessed through a shared terrace, offering views over the river and the surrounding landscape. All of the rooms have one fully glazed wall, designed to add a sense of space to the accommodation.
The project uses economical and minimalist materials. The walls and ceilings are finished with birch plywood, and the hotel contains custom-made furniture throughout. Rooms are differentiated by the use of various colours of natural linoleum and completed with black industrial lighting, and a maritime and naval theme is strengthened by the use of round porthole-style windows and a railing made of ropes and nets. The build was completed in just four months, with the hotel’s first location being a surf campsite at the Elbe riverbank close to Litomerice in the Czech Republic.
The containers are placed only on railroad sleepers, and function separately, being connected to a local electrical power source. One of the containers includes an inbuilt water reservoir to supply showers and sinks, which are equipped with water-saving taps, while only biodegradable cosmetics are used in the hotel. To avoid the rooms overheating in the summertime, an awning is attached above the glazed walls and the facades are covered with sun breakers made of waste wood planks from a nearby sawmill.
