Some 70km from the regional centre of Marmaris, down a winding road dotted with both traditional windmills and 21st-century wind turbines, Datça is the peninsula's major harbour town. Given its seaside location, it's surprisingly workaday but that lends it a certain laid-back authenticity.
Datça makes a pleasant base for seeing the area, with a string of waterside restaurants that spill onto the beach once the weather turns warm. You might prefer nearby Eski Datça (Old Datça), which has preserved the traditional feel that Datça has lost. Off season, however, Datça is a better choice, as many businesses in the neighbouring village shut their doors.
