French mountaineer dies climbing Mera Peak in Nepal

A French climber has died during an unsuccessful attempt to climb Mera Peak in Nepal. The 6476m peak is the highest of Nepal’s so-called trekking peaks, which are open to ordinary trekkers as well as mountaineers, and is a popular add-on to the famous trek to Everest Base Camp. The unnamed 30-year-old French national slipped while descending from the mountain and fell 50m into a ravine; rescuers have now transported the body to Lukla to be flown back to Kathmandu.
