Berggasse 19 is the famous address of the father of psychoanalysis. This was Sigmund Freud’s family home and workplace for 47 years before having to flee from National Socialism in 1938. The museum’s multi-floor renovation in 2020 opened all the apartment rooms and the practice spaces of Sigmund and his therapist-teacher daughter, Anna Freud. The original entrance hallway and waiting room area remain relatively untouched, a step into the home as visitors in treatment once did.
The remainder of the presentation is through monochrome designed displays that compile a window into Freud as a father and the development of his life’s work through letters, published manuscripts, photos, furniture, and private objects, including his signature spectacles. Almost all of Freud’s methods were developed and written up here, although the famous couch remains in London.
The rooms have not been recreated to their original styling; exhibits and panels are sparsely placed like the void left.
