It was only available in Germany when it first launched, but the good news for adventure-lovers is that the Ford Nugget campervan is now available across more of Europe.
The Transit Custom Nugget sleeps four people with a double bed that folds out in the roof space, and a second one that folds out in the living area. It has a three-room layout with an L-shaped kitchenette at the rear and a living and dining area in the centre.
The camper has an attractive wood-effect floor throughout the passenger compartment, and an auxiliary heating system to keep occupants comfortable while the vehicle is parked up for the night. Up to five people can gather around the interior’s fold-out table to eat and socialise, with room for three on a forward-facing bench, while the driver and front passenger seats swivel 180 degrees to face the rear.
On the catering front, a double-burner gas cooker and chrome-nickel steel sink in the kitchenette enable preparation of meals, and food supplies stay fresh inside a 40-litre compressor refrigerator. Fresh and wastewater are supplied from onboard tanks, each with a capacity of 42 litres, and these tanks also supply an outdoor shower at the rear of the vehicle.
A fold-out table with two chairs and a retractable awning allow al fresco dining. All vehicles feature rear privacy glass, flip-open windows for the second row and a heated window for the tailgate. Additional options include a premium sound system and racks for bikes and sports equipment.
The Nugget Plus is 36.7cm longer than the standard version. The extra space is used to provide a larger wardrobe and an area at the rear housing a built-in toilet and an additional folding washbasin, which can be shielded by a retractable screen.
The Nugget is now available in a range of markets including Germany, Austria, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland and the UK. In addition, a new concept campervan known as the Big Nugget was recently unveiled by Ford at the 2019 Caravan Salon in Dusseldorf. At six metres long, it will take full advantage of its extra space, creating four clearly defined, functional areas.
