Scenic hills, awesome limestone cliffs and long, long beaches.
Consisting of two islands, Phi-Phi Leh and Phi-Phi Don, Ko Phi-Phi is the Thailand of holiday dreams and tourist brochures. The emerald waters and remarkable sea- and bird-life are sublime, but rampant over-development of Phi-Phi Don threatens to spoil the island's riches.
Both islands fall within Hat Noppharat Thara/Ko Phi-Phi National Park, which has protected Phi-Phi Leh to a degree. Despite development, the overall mood of the islands is still very relaxed. There are some fine white-sand beaches and some superb rock climbing and scuba diving. To escape the hordes, hike into the interior of Phi-Phi Don or hire a sea kayak and paddle around Ko Nok, at the eastern end of Ao Ton Sai.
A series of deadly bombings took place in Bangkok on December 31, 2006. Targets included popular tourist areas and foreigners were among the casualties. Travellers should exercise extreme caution in Bangkok, heed any local warnings and closely monitor the media for any developments.
In September 2006, there was a coup against the Thai civilian government. You are advised to avoid public gatherings, and monitor the media to keep up-to-date with the situation. Most of the trouble was in the southern provinces far from Chiang Mai. Still, heed any instructions issued by the local authorities, especially if travelling to Bangkok or the southernmost provinces of Narathiwat, Yala, Pattani and Songkhla.
There is also the continuing threat of terrorist attacks in some tourist areas.
