Welcome to the Wild East, on the frontier of the mighty Amazon.
Pucallpa isn't a stand-out destination, but it's the logical gateway to the Peruvian Amazon and is perfectly pleasant in its own right. A sprawling, dusty kind of place, this lively river port is hemmed in by humid walls of jungle and commands a broad sweep of the mighty Río Ucayali.
Strikes and other civil unrest, including the blockading of the airport and main access roads of Pucallpa, have occurred in the departments of Puno and Ucayali in 2007. A state of emergency is currently in force for Coronel Portillo, the province in which Pucallpa is situated: travelers should exercise a high degree of caution, monitor local developments and avoid any demonstrations.
