Fijian dollars are the easiest currency to use day by day: some places might accept US dollars but there'll be a bit of drama about it. You won't go wrong with cash in Fiji although restaurants, shops, mid- to upper-range hotels, car rental agencies, tour and travel agents will usually accept all of the major credit cards. Visa, American Express, Diners Club and MasterCard are widely used. Some resorts charge an additional 5% for payment by credit card.
Bank notes come in denominations of two, five, 10, 20 and 50 dollars. Even though Fiji is now a republic, notes and coins still have a picture of England's Queen Elizabeth II on one side.
The dollar is broken down into 100 cents. The following coin denominations exist in cents - one, two, five, 10, 20, 50. There is also a F$1.00 coin.
The best currencies to carry are Australian, New Zealand or US dollars, which can be exchanged at all banks. Travellers cheques can be changed in most banks and exchange bureaus, and at larger hotels and duty-free shops. It's a good idea to take travellers cheques in both small and large denominations to avoid being stuck with lots of cash when leaving.
ATMs are popping up around the country and accept most international debit cards including Cirrus, Plus and Maestro. The ANZ has an ATM at Nadi International Airport and you'll find more in town at Nadi and Suva. There's also one in Savusavu, but have a backup plan (like travellers cheques) in case it's out of order. You won't find ATMs in many remote areas so plan ahead.
It's quite possible to travel around the Fiji islands relatively cheaply; however, because the country is so heavily geared for tourism, it's also easy to spend loads of money. If you stick to backpacker beds, eat cheaply (and include some self-catering), and plan your inter-island travel well, you'll get by on around US$35.00 - US$50.00 a day or less. You can save money (compared with buying airfare and accommodation separately) by buying an airfare/acommodation package (especially if you have particular interests such as diving or kayaking), but such tours are often arranged around mid to upper-end accommodation and meals.
