Lonely Planet review for Studio Museum in Harlem
This showcase, a leading benefactor and promoter of African American artists for three decades, provides work and exhibition spaces for the up and coming. Its photography collection includes works by James VanDerZee, the photographer who chronicled the Harlem renaissance of the 1920s and ’30s, and rotating shows feature exhibits from emerging artists in forms from painting and sculpture to video and tattoo work. Recent shows have included the conceptual-artist group show ’30 Seconds Off an Inch’ and ‘A Delicate Touch: Watercolors from the Permanent Collection.’
