Joshua Tree National Park

Getting there & around

Rent a car in Palm Springs or LA. From LA, the trip takes two to three hours via I-10 then Hwy 62; from Palm Springs, it takes an hour. For the southern entrance to the park, exit 1-10 about 25 miles east of Indio. Drive defensively on the 15-mile stretch of Twentynine Palms Hwy between Joshua Tree and Twentynine Palms.

Morongo Basin Transit Authority(760-366-2395, 800-794-6282; www.mbtabus.com) runs local buses along the Twentynine Palms Hwy ($1 to $2) and limited commuter services to Palm Springs (one way/round-trip $10/15). Call ahead to check fares (exact change only) and schedules.

Inside the park, bikes are a great way to get around. Just hop on your two-wheeled steed to get from your campground to any destination and you’ll have gorgeous scenery along the way. Otherwise, you’ve got to drive.
