Although there are seasonal buses from Monterey to the northern sections of Big Sur, the area is best explored by car, since you’ll be itching to stop frequently to take in the rugged beauty and stunning vistas that reveal themselves after every hairpin turn.

If you opt for public transit, MST bus 22 ($4, 75 minutes, twice daily) goes from Monterey via Carmel as far south as Nepenthe restaurant between late May to early September. The buses are equipped with bike racks.
