Lonely Planet review
Perhaps the most wide-ranging private collections of predominantly European art in the world, the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza is the favourite art gallery of many visitors to Madrid. All the big names are here, sometimes with just a single painting. Its easy-to-follow floor means that you can head straight to the paintings where your interest lies.
The collection is spread out over three floors, with the oldest works on the top (second) floor down to the contemporary scene on the ground floor. Best of all on the second floor is the extension (Rooms A to H) built to house the burgeoning collection of Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza with more Canalettos hanging alongside Monet, Sisley, Renoir, Pissarro, Degas, Constable and Van Gogh.
