The most famous and prestigious place to learn Slovene is the Centre for Slovene as a Second/Foreign Language (Center za Slovenščino kot Drugi/Tuji Jezik; 01-241 86 77; www.centerslo.net; 2nd fl, Kongresni trg 12; 11am-1pm Mon, Tue, Thu & Fri, 11am-1pm & 3-5pm Wed) at the University of Ljubljana. There are a number of courses available, including a two-week winter course in January/February for €467, two- and four-week summer ones in July for €467 and €789 respectively, and an intensive 14-week course running from October to January and February to May for €1168 per semester. Prices do not include room and board. The centre also sponsors free two-hour introductory lessons in Slovene for tourists once a week at the Slovenian Tourist Information Centre in Ljubljana.

Private schools offering courses in Slovene in Ljubljana include the academic Miklošič Educational Centre (01-230 76 02; www.ism.si; Miklošičeva cesta 26), with courses of 30/85 hours starting at €160/395, and the upbeat Jezikovni centre Mint International House Ljubljana (01-300 43 00; www.mint.si; 1st fl, Kersnikova ulica 1), with courses of 51/90 hours costing €384/615. Individual lessons cost from €36 an hour.
