Lonely Planet review for State Hermitage Museum

There are art galleries, there are museums, there are the great museums of the world and then there is the Hermitage. An unrivalled collection of art treasures housed in the magnificent palace from which the Romanov tsars ruled the Russian Empire, the State Hermitage will inevitably be the focus of any first visit to St Petersburg, and rightly so. At the information kiosk of the State Hermitage Museum you can pick up a free colour map of the museum, available in most European languages. Immediately after ticket inspection you can hire an audio guide (R250) with recorded tours in English, German, French, Italian or Russian. Groups enter from the river side of the Winter Palace.

    Truly marvellous museum

    irene_adler recommends this,

The Hermitage is a must-see for any first time visitor to St Petersburg and like the Louvre in Paris, the collection is so large that there is plenty to enchant returning guests.

If you've been impressed by the museum, or are looking to get a sense of it before you go, you might want to consider watching Sokurov's 2002 film Russian Ark, which was filmed in the museum in a single take (96 minutes) throughout the various rooms of the Hermitage.

I was happily surprised that the museum is free for students.

You HAVE to go to this museum - one for the museum freaks

    katmar33 recommends this,

I loved the Hermitage. Just as well, as I planned my whole trip around visiting.
So clearly, I am a museum freak - so this post is for those of similar bent.

You name it in the art world, one or more fine examples are here (well if you consider "modern" art to be the Impressionists era...). Dutch masters, fine crafts, Matisse, Van Gogh, Cezanne, Renoir. You get the drift. Sublime. Spend 2 days. I spent one day from dawn till dusk.
