Lonely Planet review for Salt Mine

Just outside the administrative boundaries of Kraków, some 14km southeast of the city centre, Wieliczka (vyeh- leech -kah) is famous for its ultra-deep Salt Mine, which has been in continuous operation for 700 years and can be visited. It’s an eerie world of pits and chambers, and everything has been carved by hand from salt blocks. The mine was included on Unesco’s World Heritage List in 1978.

    Incredible experience.

    vgwatson recommends this,

Amazing history, engineering and artistry. And ironically, the food in the cafeteria was MASSIVELY under salted. Also, walking around down in the mines completely cured my sinus infection.

    Kingas Cavern is breathtaking

    sacd recommends this,

been there several years ago. The tour starts with a walk from the entrance down some steps into the first cavern. some of the carvings are fantastic. Kingas cavern is a chapel but some of the carvings are truly amazin..with even pictures carved into the walls, and alter and even a lifesize sculpture of john paul II. Dont forget your cash for the gifts at the bottom of the mine ;)
