Climate & when to go

When to go to Montenegro climate chart

In Montenegro it’s possible to reach an altitude of 1700m within 10km of the coast, so wild variances in climate are to be expected.

Like most of the Mediterranean region, Montenegro’s coast enjoys balmy summers and mild winters. The warmest months are July and August, when the temperature ranges from 19°C to 29°C (average lowest to average highest).

In the mountainous interior the temperatures are considerably cooler, with the exception of the plain around Podgorica which sizzles in summer. January temperatures range from -7°C to 2°C, while even in August, the warmest month, the average minimum temperature is a nippy 9°C, although the maximum is around 23°C. The ski season is from December to March. Spectacular afternoon thunderstorms are quite common in summer.

The Montenegrin coast is at its best in May, June and September, but avoid July and August, when accommodation becomes quite scarce and expensive. And just to let you know – the summer sea temperature is 25°C to 28°C.
