Direct buses between Nagasaki and Shimatetsu bus station (74-3131) in Unzen take almost two hours (¥1900). Buses run more frequently from the town of Isahaya, which is 35 minutes by kaisoku train (¥450) from Nagasaki. From Isahaya to Unzen, buses take another 80 minutes (¥1400). Onward buses from Unzen to Shimabara (¥810, 45 minutes) stop at Shimabara’s port and castle before arriving at Shimabara train station.
