Introducing Kumamoto-ken

Kumamoto-ken is one of the seven prefectures of Kyūshū, spanning the central western portion of the island. Relive some of the last days of the samurai at Kumamoto-jō, the castle that looms over the centre of the region's eponymous capital. Bushidō honour aside, Kumamoto also offers a happening bar scene and some great dining, especially if basashi (raw horsemeat) is among your favourites. Further east is the stunning volcanic scenery of the Aso-san Area a huge crater, 128km (80mi) in circumference, where hiking and walking opportunities abound. If this all sounds like far too much activity, the onsen (hot-spring) towns of Kurokawa, Yamaga & Kikuchi will give sweet relief. Kurokawa, in particular is a lovely spot for a low-key soak.
