Introducing Dō-nan (Southern Hokkaidō)

The southern part of Hokkaidō takes in the curved finger of land that reaches south from Sapporo towards Honshū. Start your trip in Hakodate, a picturesque port city with some great museums and an interesting historical feel. Be sure to try some of the local squid dishes. The smaller town of Esashi offers a chance to check out the well-preserved mansions of the 19th-century 'herring barons' built during the Meiji period when the seas were clouded with these oily little fishes. Visit nearby Matsumae at the end of April, when the 10,000 sakura (cherry trees) are blooming.
