The most accessible village by car and the only Cinque Terre settlement to sport a tourist beach, Monterosso is the furthest west and least quintessential of the quintet (it was briefly ditched from the group in the 1940s). Noted for its lemon trees and anchovies, the village is split into two parts (old and new) linked by an underground tunnel that burrows beneath the blustery San Cristoforo promontory. Monterosso was badly hit by the 2011 floods, but has recovered remarkably quickly. Most businesses in town are open again, although trails are still experiencing closures.
