Introducing Portlaoise

Portlaoise’s two main edifices could be called ‘nuts and bolts’ – the large mental asylum and maximum-security prison. Unless you’re planning to lose the plot or commit murder, there’s very little to keep you here as a visitor. However, the Slieve Bloom Mountains to the west and the impressive Rock of Dunamaise to the east are well worth a visit.
