Lonely Planet review
The HPPGB has a monopoly on guided climbs up Gunung Batur. It requires that all trekking agencies that operate on the mountain hire at least one of its guides for trips up the mountain. In addition, the cartel has developed a reputation for tough tactics in requiring climbers to use its guides and during negotiations for its services.
That said, many people use the services of HPPGB guides without incident, and some of the guides win plaudits from visitors for their ideas in customising trips.
The following strategies should help you have a good climb:
Be absolutely clear in your agreement with the HPPGB about the terms you're agreeing to, such as whether fees are per person or group and include breakfast, and exactly where you will go.
Deal with one of the trekking agencies. There will still be an HPPGB guide along, but all arrangements will be done through the agency.
HPPGB rates and times are posted at its office. The Batur Sunrise trek goes from 4am to 8am, the Gunung Batur Main Crater trek from 4am to 10am.
