Outbound Adventure
Outbound Adventure runs one-day rafting trips on the Ulhas River near Karjat, 88km southeast of Mumbai, from July to early September (Rs1500 per person). After a good rain, rapids can get up to Grade III+, though usually the rafting is much calmer, with lots of twists and zigzags. OA also organises camping and canoeing trips.

Little tykes with energy to burn will love Gorai Island amusement park, Water Kingdom. It is well maintained with lots of rides, slides and shade. Combined tickets, which include entry to Esselworld, are Rs680/550 (adult/child). Off-season weekday ticket prices are lower. It’s a Rs35 ferry ride from Borivali jetty.

One of the main attractions in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park is the lion & tiger safari, departing from the tiger orientation centre (about 1km in from the main entrance). Expect a whirlwind 20-minute jaunt by bus through the two separate areas of the park housing the tigers and lions.

At Chowpatty Beach, H2O Water Sports Complex rents out jet skis (per 10 minutes Rs950), kayaks (per half-hour Rs150) and speed boats (per person per ‘round’ – about five minutes – Rs100) – all weather permitting (it often doesn’t). It also operates cruises.

The Amateur Riders’ Club has horse rides for those who know how to ride for Rs1000 per 30 minutes; escorts cost Rs250 to Rs500 extra. If you don’t, 10-day camps, with a half-hour lesson daily, cost Rs4500. Both require advance booking at the office.
