Getting there & away
The Central bus stand (2520853; Bangalore–Mysore Rd) handles all KSRTC long-distance buses. The City bus stand (2425819; Sayaji Rao Rd) is for city, Srirangapatnam and Chamundi Hill buses.
For Belur, Halebid or Sravanabelagola, the usual gateway is Hassan. There’s one bus to Sravanabelagola; otherwise you can transfer at Channarayapatna. For Hampi, the best transfer point is Hospet.
The Private bus stand (Sayyaji Rao Rd) has services to Hubli, Bijapur, Mangalore, Ooty and Ernakulum. Book tickets with Kiran Tours & Travel (5559404; 21/2 Chandragupta Rd).
At the railway booking office (131; 8am-8pm Mon-Sat, 8am-2pm Sun), located within the train station, you can reserve a seat on one of six daily expresses to Bengaluru (2nd/chair Rs 70/228, three hours), or on the high-speed Shatabdi (chair/executive Rs 275/550, two hours), departing at 2.20pm daily except Tuesday. The Shatabdi continues to Chennai (chair/executive Rs 690/1315, seven hours). Several passenger trains also go daily to Bengaluru (Rs 28, 3½ hours), stopping at Srirangapatnam (Rs 9, 20 minutes).
Two passenger and three express trains go daily to Arsikere and Hassan. One express sets off to Mumbai on Thursday at 6.50am (sleeper/3AC/2AC Rs 369/1009/1583).

There are no flights to Mysore (although an airport is in the offing). Indian Airlines (2421846; Jhansi Lakshmi Bai Rd; 10am-1.30pm & 2.15-5pm) has an office next to KSTDC Hotel Mayura Hoysala.
