In 2005–06, there was an outbreak of H5N1 bird flu in a remote region of Rügen near the Wittow Ferry (Wittower Fähre). It was widely reported in the media but swiftly brought under control. Check out the latest before travelling, but unless the situation changes drastically, there’s no need to avoid the island, although you should take sensible precautions and not handle birds or feathers.
