Bus

Governmental strictures intended to limit private-sector competition with the state-owned SNCF mean that as of this writing, Eurolines buses must stop 2.5km south of the Eurolines office (03 90 22 14 60; 6d place d’Austerlitz; Lycée Couffignal; 10am-12.30pm & 2-6.30pm Mon-Fri, 10am-12.30pm Sat) near Stade de la Meinau (the city’s main football stadium), on rue du Maréchal Lefèbvre about 200m west of av de Colmar.

Strasbourg city bus No 21 (€1.20) links place Gutenberg with the Stadthalle in Kehl, the German town just across the Rhine.

Train

The train station, built in 1883 – and, as we go to press, being given a 120m-long, 23m-high glass façade and underground galleries so it can welcome the TGV in style – is linked to Metz (€20.40, 1¼ to 1¾ hours, four to eight daily), Nancy (€19.70, 1¼ hours, 10 to 17 daily) and Paris’ Gare de l’Est (€50.30, four to 4¾ hours, nine to 13 daily); and, internationally, to Basel (Bâle; €18.50, 1¼ hours, 11 to 16 direct daily) and Frankfurt (€38.90, 2½ hours, eight or nine nondirect daily).

Route du Vin destinations include Colmar (€9.70, 35 to 60 minutes, 35 daily weekdays, 22 daily weekends), Dambach-la-Ville (€7.10, one hour, 12 daily on weekdays, five to six daily weekends), Obernai (€5, 26 to 45 minutes, 20 daily weekdays, five to seven daily weekends) and Sélestat (€7, 20 minutes, 24 to 42 daily).

On the Grande Île, tickets are available at the SNCF Boutique (5 rue des France-Bourgeois; 10am-7pm Mon-Fri, to 5pm Sat).

Air

Strasbourg’s airport (03 88 64 67 67; www.strasbourg.aeroport.fr) is 12km southwest of the city centre (towards Molsheim) near the village of Entzheim.
