Introducing Lake Pielinen Region
At the heart of northern Karelia is Pielinen, Finland’s sixth-largest lake, which offers plenty of water-sports action. Finns flock to Koli National Park for epic views and winter skiing, while Lieksa and Nurmes equip intrepid travellers to head out into wilds such as Ruunaa for whitewater rafting. Bring your hiking boots because this is a place to be active; towns here are really just bases for getting into the great outdoors. A main road loops the lake while ferries cross it from Lieksa to Koli. When the lake freezes solid during winter, take the thrilling short cut on a snowmobile or cross-country skis.
