Lonely Planet review
One of CL Engel’s finest creations, the chalk-white neoclassical Lutheran cathedral presides over Senaatintori. Though as it was not completed until 1852, the architect, who died in 1840, never saw it. Though created to serve as a reminder of God’s supremacy, its high flight of stairs has become a meeting place for canoodling couples, and a setting for New Year’s revelry. The spartan interior has little ornamentation under the lofty dome beyond an altar painting of the Burial of Christ and three stern statues of the Reformation heroes Luther, Melanchthon and Mikael Agricola, looking like they’ve just marked your theology exam and taken rather a dim view of your prospects.
