Leaving our third home in a year
Blog: Justin and Lauren's travels - 22 December 2009
"Travelling is a brutality. It forces you to trust strangers and to lose sight of all that familiar comfort of home and friends. You are constantly off balance. Nothing is yours except the essential things - air, sleep, dreams, the sea, the sky - all things tending towards the eternal or what we imagine of it."Cesare Pavese

Blog Update: London, Hong Kong and Sydney
Blog: The Amazing Dawdle - 22 December 2009
LondonWe were scheduled to fly into London from Santiago via Madrid Spain at 2pm. As we pulled into the check-in, the agent looked at us and told us that our flight was delayed until 6pm, at least, which meant delays of over four hours. At least we had the lounge to chill out in. Once we landed in Madrid, we had about a half hour to spare (after immigration and navigating their massive train system) before hopping a flight to London. We were lucky enough to have our friend Mel pick us up at the airport, as we were staying with her and her husband and baby.

Lady in a Winter Wonderland
Blog: A Lady in London - 20 December 2009
I haven't gotten into the holiday spirit this year. I went without an advent calendar for the first time in my life, I haven't listened to much holiday music, and I was too lazy to get a Christmas tree.

Toilets and Traveling
Blog: Green Earth Guides ~ Traveling Naturally - 14 December 2009
I consider myself relatively easy going about toilets and bathroom facilities. That is I have gone backwoods camping and once lived with nothing more than an outhouse for almost four years. So it is not that I require luxury. However, when traveling I am amazed at the state of some toilettes.

Duck Race in Bath (UK)
Blog: The Corny Traveler's Chronicles - 11 December 2009
I wasn't aware of the concept of Bank Holiday before I reached UK, and it was on my first Monday in Bath. Anyway, a surprise holiday is always welcome *grin* and I went down to the main town for a shopping expedition when I came across this exciting race happening at the Pulteney Bridge. I'll try to capture the event in a few pictures..

Chilli Cool Sichuan, King’s Cross
Blog: An American in London - 8 December 2009
A few weeks ago, I ate at Sichuan-heavy Ba Shan, where, except for the kung pao chicken, everything I ordered was mediocre and relatively pricey. And then I read this positive review of Chilli Cool Sichuan Restaurant by blogger, Mr. Noodles, who is a regular there, and I knew I’d have to try it [...]

I Still Love London
Blog: Twenty-Something Travel - 6 December 2009
Even if you’ve only been paying minimal attention the past couple weeks, you can probably tell that I am a huge London person. Our love affair began on my first trip abroad at 15 years old. Later I returned to study Victorian literature there and after graduation I came back to work there. The city [...]

Coffee of the day: The Troubadour, London – UK
Blog: Nomadic Notes Travel Blog - 4 December 2009
When I’m in London I usually stay around the Earl’s Court/Gloucester Rd area. It’s in well to do leafy West London and has good transport connections. It is also home to one of my favourite cafe’s – the Troubadour. The Troubadour has been around since 1954 and it was a famous music venue in the 60’s. [...]

London and a dash of Christmas spirit
Blog: 501 Places - 3 December 2009
I grew up in Nottingham and spent my adult life moving around many of England’s provinces, but until recently never lived near to London. I often saw the lights of the London at Christmas on the TV and wondered what I was missing. So earlier this week we took the chance to see the lights [...]

A night walk in London: The Enchanted Woodland
Blog: 501 Places - 29 November 2009
As we drove towards south west London, the rain started to fall, and quickly got heavier until the wipers were working at full-speed. We questioned the sanity of going on, but having come so far and armed with a large umbrella we decided to carry on. And what a treat! Syon Park, the grand home [...]

Uncovering a hidden side of London on foot
Blog: 501 Places - 23 November 2009
A few weeks ago we took a train into London and got off at London Bridge with no particular plans. We knew we wanted to walk, as it was a beautiful autumn day. But beyond that we were happy to see what came our way. The pictures below tell the story, and are a great [...]

Another northern winter
Blog: Justin and Lauren's travels - 21 November 2009
In the streets near our apartmentStrange timing has seen us chase winter around the world this year, with a brief, humid interlude in Philadelphia before we left for Europe. Here in Nottingham, autumn has quickly given way to winter. A couple of weeks ago the leaves were yellow and still falling, and now the trees are almost bare. I have a feeling my most enduring memories of England will be of naked, spider-y branches silhouetted against the low, sullen sky. I really hate the English sky! Always so grey.

Lady at Cheltenham Racecourse
Blog: A Lady in London - 17 November 2009
With my year as the Face of Ascot behind me, I wasn't sure when I would next make it back to the races. But at Royal Ascot in June my boyfriend and I were introduced to the executive director of Gloucestershire's Cheltenham racecourse. He kindly invited us to spend a day at the races in Cheltenham, an offer which we took him up on over the weekend.

Launceston Place, Kensington
Blog: An American in London - 16 November 2009
Despite living and working in the easterly bits of central London, I visited two restaurants in Kensington over the last seven days: Kitchen W8 and Launceston Place. I thought the former was pleasant and worth visiting when already in the area, but in contrast, the latter is a worthy cross-town destination. If [...]
