Lonely Planet review for Astronomical Clock

Ironically, if you wish to tell the time in the Old Town Sq, it's easier to look at the clock above this, because this 1490 mechanical marvel is tricky to decipher. The clock's creator, Master Hanuš, was allegedly blinded so he could not duplicate the clock elsewhere, although this is undoubtedly a myth.

At the center of everything is the Astronomical Clock. It was wonderful being able to see it during Christmastime.

Not earth-shattering but worth a look if you're there.

Every hour, Old Town Square is filled with gawp-mouthed tourists waiting for the Astronomical Clock to do its mechanical magic. You may be a bit disappointed when it finally does, since the show of moving figures is pretty modest by modern standards. Keep in mind, however, that this was built 500 years ago -- so pretty good, really, eh?

I wouldn't say you need to run from across town to see it, but if you're going to be in Old Town Square anyway, stop by and watch it. Read up on the history of the figures on the clock if you can -- it makes it much more interesting to find out the story behind each of the figures.
