Lokrum Island/Croatia

Introducing Lokrum Island

A ferry shuttles roughly hourly in summer to lush Lokrum Island (40KN return, last boat back at 6pm), a Unesco-protected national park. It’s a beautiful, forested place of holm oaks and black ash, pine and olive trees, and an ideal escape from urban Dubrovnik. Swimming is excellent, though beaches are rocky. The nudist beach (marked FKK) is a delight for naturists and very popular with the gay community. Check out the fine botanical garden, which has a cacti section with some giant agaves, and palms native to Brazil and South Africa. The ruined medieval Benedictine monastery is currently being renovated.

The attractive cafe-restaurant Lacroma sells snacks, meals and ice cream; it’s just above the harbour. Sometimes there’s live guitar music here, too.

Note that no one can stay overnight and smoking is not permitted anywhere on the island.
