Introducing Lokrum Island
A ferry shuttles roughly hourly in summer (half-hourly in July and August) on the 10-minute trip from Dubrovnik's Old Harbour to lush Lokrum Island (adult/child return 56/16KN). It’s a beautiful, forested place of holm oaks, black ash, pines and olive trees, and an ideal escape from urban Dubrovnik. Swimming is excellent, though the beaches are rocky. The nudist beach (marked FKK) is also Dubrovnik's de facto gay beach.
Check out the ruined medieval Benedictine monastery and the fine botanical garden, which has a cacti section with some giant agaves, and palms native to Brazil and South Africa.
Before you leave the boat, make sure you check what time the last boat to the mainland departs. Note that no one can stay overnight and smoking is not permitted anywhere on the island. The island is only open to the public from April to November.
