Getting there & around
The Sault Ste Marie Airport (YAM; 705-779-3031; www.saultairport.com; 475 Airport Rd) is about 20km from downtown. Take Second Line (Hwy 550) 13km west, then head south for 5km along Airport Rd (Hwy 565). Flights to and from Toronto are available with Air Canada Jazz, and Bearskin Airlines offers services to several locations in Ontario and Manitoba including Ottawa, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay and Sudbury. There are several car-rental options at the airport including Enterprise and Budget. Check with your hotel before arrival as it might offer complimentary pickup service.
The bus station (705-949-4711; 73 Brock St) is downtown and serves as a terminus for local, domestic and international ground transportation. Greyhound Canada runs buses between Sault Ste Marie and Sudbury ($57, four hours, three daily) and between Sault Ste Marie and Thunder Bay ($126, nine hours, two daily). Join the circus of gamblers and drinkers and hop over to Sault Ste Marie’s American twin. The International Bridge Bus (906-632-6882; $2.25) follows a regular circuit between both borders, stopping every other hour at several locations in the Soo including the Station Mall, the Cambrian Mall and the bus station. The bus doesn’t run on Sundays or on most American national holidays.
