Twelve kilometres north of Hobart's city centre, MONA occupies a saucepan-shaped peninsula jutting into the Derwent River. Arrayed across three underground levels, abutting a sheer rock face, the $75-million museum has been described by philanthropist owner David Walsh as ‘a subversive adult Disneyland’. Ancient antiquities are showcased next to contemporary works: sexy, provocative, disturbing and deeply engaging. Don't miss it!
To get here catch the MONA Roma ferry or shuttle bus from Hobart’s Brooke St Pier ($20 return). Book everything online.
Also at MONA is the cellar door for Moorilla , a winery established here in the 1950s. Duck in for a wine or Moo Brew beer tasting, or have lunch upstairs at the outstanding restaurant, The Source . You can also catch a summer concert on the lawns, or maybe splash out for a night in the uber-swish Pavilions .
MONA is also the driving force behind Hobart’s annual MONA FOMA arts and music festival, and the disquieting Dark MOFO winter festival.
