Lonely Planet review
Melbourne's coliseum, the MCG, regularly pulls crowds of 50,000 to 80,000. The 'G' is the jewel in the sporting precinct's crown .
In 1858 the first game of Aussie Rules football was played where the MCG and its car parks now stand, and in 1877 it was the venue for the first Test cricket match between Australia and England. The MCG was also the central stadium for the 1956 Melbourne Olympics and the 2006 Commonwealth Games. It recently underwent the biggest building works in its 150-year history, with the new William Barak Bridge linking it to the CBD, and newfangled facilities including a new members stand. MCG members are a chosen few. To become a member, you'll need to seek out two members to propose and second your nomination; oh, and wait approximately 20 years for the 180,000 others before you on the waiting list to be offered their places.
You don't have to be handy with the bat and ball to get the chance to stand on the hallowed turf at the 'G'. Tours take you through the stands, corporate and coaches' areas, and onto the ground. They run every half-hour (on non-match days) from to and take 1.5 hours.
