Restaurants in Northern Taiwan

  1. A

    Taiya Popo

This long-running restaurant on the tourist street in Wulai village serves some great if obscure aboriginal dishes such as déma miàn (得麼面; fermented pork), betel-nut salad, and fried bees (they taste like popcorn chicken; NT$350).

  2. Palace Restaurant

Set in a short row of Japanese-era houses, this restaurant has both an old-time wooden interior and good food. Guests can sit on the floor, Japanese style, or at tables. To reach the restaurant, cross the bridge over the Keelung River and turn right. Palace is 100m down the road. There are signs in Chinese.

  4. Aux Cimes de la Fountaine

An odd name for a cosy (almost funky) aboriginal restaurant and cafe overhanging the Wenshui River (the Chinese actually reads 'Mountain Kiss Spring'). The two Ami sisters who run the place whip up some fine meals (mostly hot pot and hot plates), and play good music, to boot. When you're there just be sure to give some attention to the two toy poodles lounging bar-side: they're family.
