A cheerful little four-storey retreat in a nice spot near the Parco Civico, this family-run hotel is gathered around a courtyard and offers clean rooms (shame about the carpet in some). Singles are small.
A renovated art-nouveau building is home to rooms with reds, blues and creams dominating the decor. Cheaper ones have a shared bathroom in the corridor. The restaurant downstairs is a no-alcohol establishment.
A lovely place to stay is the Locanda del Giglio, in Roveredo, Capriasca, 12km north of Lugano. It is a warm timber building powered on solar energy. Rooms have balconies offering mountain views and even lake glimpses.
The Hostel Montarina has simple rooms with four to 16 bunk beds. A buffet breakfast is available for Sfr12. There is also a hotel on the site, whose best rooms are airy, with timber floors and antiques. Some rooms have private kitchen.
Housed in the Villa Savosa, this is one of the more enticing youth hostels in the country. The dorms have up to eight bunk beds. Take bus 5 to Crocifisso.
From the balconies of the front rooms you look straight out over Lago di Lugano. These are the best, but other cheaper rooms are scattered about the hotel. Rooms are comfortable, with a smattering of antique furniture.
