Introducing Lake Solina

About 30km southwest of Ustrzyki Dolne and accessible by bus is Lake Solina (Jezioro Solińskie), a reservoir 27km long and 60m deep, created in 1968 when the San River was dammed. Today it is the Bieszczady region’s most important centre for water sports and recreation.

Polańczyk, the attractive town on the irregularly shaped lake’s western shore, offers visitors everything from sailing and windsurfing to fishing and beaches. The tourist office (013 470 3028; www.esolina.pl; ul Wiejska 2; 8am-6pm Mon-Fri, 10am-6pm Sat), just off Hwy 894 on the way to Lesko, can supply you with all the details.

Ul Zdrojowa, which starts just east of the tourist office, is lined with hotels and sanatoriums offering any number of treatments. Many of them are huge soulless blocks; instead head for Pensjonat Korona (013 469 2201; www.pensjonatkorona.pl; ul Zdrojowa 29; s/d 60/120zł), a flower-bedecked guesthouse with 40 beds and its own restaurant and pizzeria just over 1km down the peninsula. For budget accommodation close to the water, it’s hard to beat the Centrum Wypoczynkowe Wyspa Polańczyk (013 469 2746; www.solina.pl; 4-/6-/8-person cabins 250/300/400zł), which has 20 A-frame cabins on the southwestern cost of the of the Big Island (Wyspa Duża), accessible by ferry boat across a channel a mere 5m wide.
