Caffè Pedrocchi
Since 1831, this neoclassical landmark has been a favourite of Stendhal and other pillars of Padua’s cafe society for heart-poundingly powerful coffee and caffè correto (coffee cocktails). The grand 1st floor is decorated in styles ranging from ancient Egyptian to Imperial, and during the day you can visit the Museo del Risorgimento e dell’Età Contemporanea, recounting local and national history from the fall of Venice in 1797 until the republican constitution of 1848 in original documents, images and mementos.

Enoteca Angelo Rasi
Come for a glass of wine and cicheti, and inevitably you’ll pull up a chair by the canal and stay for dinner under the lime trees. Rustic fare is reinvented with a touch of whimsy: creamed cod comes with savoury squid-ink polenta doughnuts, ricotta gnocchi is topped with a decadent zucchini mousse sauce, and cheeses are presented in the form of a clock.

Osteria Dal Capo
Rub elbows with locals – literally – over dinner at tiny tables precariously piled with traditional Venetian seafood, local wines by the glass, and a few inspired novelties, such as caviale di melanzane con bufala (eggplant caviar with buffalo mozzarella atop crispy wafer bread). Reservations and a sociable nature advised.

Trattoria Le Sette Teste
Vast plates of pasta (€9) are presented here like a dare, and meaty mains and chocolaty desserts pose serious threats to after-lunch sightseeing plans at the Palazzo della Ragione around the corner.

Trattoria San Pietro
Venice meets Milanese influences behind these kitchen doors, but the results are pure Padua: think Venetian artichokes with Milanese veal, or saffron risotto with seafood. Reserve ahead.

Caffè Cavour
Pistachio macaroons, wild berry tarts, and other two-bite indulgences sweeten the expressions of traffic cops bolting espresso at the curved granite bar.

Per Bacco
Try the tagliatelle alla norcina con tartufo nero (pasta with black truffles), a classic of Umbrian cuisine and a long-standing favourite here.

L'Anfora
A good-natured place where locals crowd the bar for a wine or two and perhaps a few snacks. Or you can sit down for a hearty meal. Fancy some tripe?
