These basic yet comfy motel rooms are a popular budget choice. Rooms are clean and have ocean views from the front porch that dangles with vines. Breakfast is included, and the helpful staff can arrange early morning taxis to the airport.
Set on a leafy backstreet, this long-time budget joint is still rocking with a newer annex behind the weathered original. Older rooms are sizeable but scruffy with scuffed walls and saggy beds...
Hotel Bahagia Ii
Soe's best choice with a range of spacious, tiled rooms, queen and double beds (with wooden headboards), and a few cottages that make sense for families. All rooms are fan-cooled, but you won't need air-con here anyway.
Hotel Gajah Mada
Well situated above the valley and, as it happens, the town's utility (you'll hear that generator hum all night). Rooms are huge, comfortable and clean with queen beds, crown mouldings, TV and hot water...
Hotel Jati Asih
The newest hotel in town doesn't look all that new. Rooms are massive, fan-cooled and have windows facing an inner courtyard. They're reasonably clean with wooden beds and VIP rooms have hot water. You'll see it on the left as you roll into Soe.
The airy lobby has grace, and the rooms are decent with wooden bed-frames, and flat-screen TVs. A few standard rooms have private terraces in the tree tops, but some have no windows at all, or have been tainted by nicotine. Sniff before you commit.
This place has immaculate, squeaky-clean rooms with gorgeous teak floors and stylish modern furniture - even the standard class have two huge beds. There's a fancy, overpriced in-house café-restaurant, but not much else within walking distance.
Hotel T More
Timor's newest hotel, and the closest to the airport, is arguably the best hotel in Kupang. Rooms sprawl around an interior atrium, offer wall-mounted flat-screen TVs, tasteful accent wallpaper, mini bar, and a built-in wardrobe...
The best value in town with clean, ceramic-tiled rooms and Western-style bathrooms. Guests can use the kitchen. Run by the much-loved, living NTT encyclopedia, Edwin Lerrick.
Maya Beach Hotel
A decent choice, this large concrete hotel has plenty of inoffensive, well-kept if slightly bland tiled rooms at fair prices, some with sea views.
Orchid Garden Hotel
It could be an absolutely first-class deal with some more maintenance, but as long as you expect a leaky tap or two this remains a great place to stay for the price...
Swiss Bel Inn Kristal
Completing a major renovation and rebranding at research time, the beachfront location and resort feel makes this the preferred hotel of the Alor and Rote set. Rooms are spacious and carpeted with minibar, bathtubs, and satellite TV...
