    Smack on stylish Av Santa Fe, this shiny mall specializes in chic clothes boutiques, jewelry stores, and home interior emporiums. The food court is popular with locals and the cinemas get packed in the evenings.

    Like many of BA's most-coveted labels, Calma Chicha takes its inspiration from Argentine traditions, crafting stylish clothing and kitschy Argentine home decor. This is the place to head for patchwork cow-hide carpets and placemats made out of that colorful stripey nylon used for shopping bags! Head to the store at Honduras 4925 for the homeware.

    In business since 1943, Casa Lopez sells quality leather jackets, luggage, bags and accessories - just smell the hide and check out that stitching - superb. The styles err on the conservative side; this is the place to come for classics not fashion. There are also branches in Patio Bullrich and Galerías Pacífico.

    Avoid Casa Rey on Sunday when the stock slips off the racks faster than the staff can hang it - BA's hipsters love Casa Rey's cool unisex threads. Best to head here mid-week to try on the retro printed shirts, funky sneakers, and casual cord coats. Sizes are tiny - a reflection of the waif-like clientele.

  6. Cat Ballou

    Esteemed designers Alicia Goñi and Florencia Pieres kick out some of the city's most fashionable clothing and jewelry, allowing BA's hip upper echelons to gypsy things up. Pieres' splendid, fairly priced jewelry combines fabric and jewels with an exquisitely beautiful, ragtag result.

  7. Centro Cultural de los Artistas

    While there are dozens of markets and shops in the vibrantly painted buildings around El Caminito selling arts, crafts and souvenirs, this complex was the first and remains the best. Not only does it give you an opportunity to take a peek inside one of the former tenements, but it has a small art gallery where you can buy local paintings.

    Club de Tango houses a truly amazing array of tango memorabilia, including posters, cards, videos, books and CDs. The posters and postcards (beautiful reprints of old tango sheet-music covers) are some of the coolest art souvenirs you'll find anywhere. Prices are excellent.

    Ballet flats, heels and knee-high boots are all handmade and crafted in bright colors, while the designs hint at footwear for wealthy gypsies. Handbags and jackets take a backseat to the shoes, but, boy, they are slick too.

  12. El Ateneo

    Even if you don't need a book, pop into Ateneo's flagship bookstore, the biggest bookshop in South America and a treat for the eyes. It occupies the restored Grand Splendid theater, built in 1919 and now complete with bookshelves in the balconies, reading nooks in the boxes and a cafe on stage. Some English books available.

    Expect hip style, superb tailoring and sleek cuts for guys by well-regarded BA designer Nestor Goldberg. This is a great place to shop for something special - 'going-out' shirts and trousers, a leather jacket that will last and look-cool-forever pants, solid leather bags and shoes.

    The city's best - and our favorite - gourmet deli stocks everything: from traditional Argentine dulce de batata (candied sweet potato; delicious with cheese) to fine dulce de leche (don't confuse the two, this is Argentina's famed milk caramel-like spread). You'll also find olives and wines, and products impossible to find elsewhere in BA.

    If you're planning on going to the Campo Argentino de Polo, stop in here first so you look the part - this is where BA's handsome polo players head for the finest quality gear. The leather riding boots are the kind that will last forever. You'll also find mate gourds and other traditional Argentine items that make great souvenirs.

    Caught somewhere between skatewear and preppy attire, Felix offers trendy, casual dress shirts, T-shirts, pants and scarves for a put-together, kick-around-town look. Prices are reasonable.

  17. Feria Artesanal Plaza Intendente Alvear

    Allow time to browse this sprawling craft market after your visit to the Cementerio de la Recoleta. It skirts around the park in front of the cemetery and stretches all the way down the slope and across the road. There's an amazing array of arts, crafts and souvenirs, including hand-made ponchos, handcrafted jewelry, mate gourds and bombillas , and original art.

  18. Feria de San Telmo

    On Sundays, Calle Defensa is closed to traffic and the street is a sea of people browsing the hippy crafts stalls as they make their pilgrimage from Plaza de Mayo to Plaza Dorrego. The latter is jammed with stalls selling antiques, collectibles and bric-a-brac - everything from gorgeous green and cobalt blue antique seltzer bottles to tango memorabilia; this market is officially known as Feria de Pedro San Telmo.

    This unique boutique is our favorite. Gabriella Capucci does very groovy women's fashion that's highly creative, often whimsical, and sometimes kitsch, incorporating cute trinkets, recycled fabrics, and antique bits and bobs into her pieces. You won't find a more special BA souvenir.

    The city's hipsters head to this fluoro-lit shopping arcade for its scores of shops selling groovy second-hand gear and the occasional fab vintage piece.

  21. Galería Bond Street

    This grungy shopping arcade with three floors of cool little boutiques is always buzzing - and not just with tattoo needles. BA's young groovers treat this place as their second home, dropping in to get their eyebrows pierced, buy secondhand records, CDs and comics, and try on hip threads from young designers. And of course add a new tat to their collection.

  23. Galerías Pacífico

    Built in 1889 by Paris department store Bon Marché, this exquisite shopping center sat empty for years before being restored in 1992 to its present state. More impressive than the top-name stores inside are the vaulted ceilings, painted by five renowned Argentine artists, including Antonio Berni.

    BA's intellectuals, academics, artists and writers make this marvelous bookshop their second home. Among the philosophy, history, art, and literature books, you'll find a large selection of tango books (mostly in Spanish) and a diverse range of Latin American music CDs, from rock nacional (Argentine rock) to Brazilian beats.

    This is one of BA's best kids clothing lines and it's one fun store - children who like to shop will love it here. There's a great selection of colorful and cool kids clothing, from ages two to 10. We especially love the rather whimsical T-shirts - if only they had them in adult's sizes…
