Phuong Nam
Next door to the Mekong, this place offers a similar ambience, but has the slight advantage of an upstairs terrace for people-watching.

B
Restaurant Alley
If you fancy skipping the main tourist scene on the riverfront, then try this small alley between Ð Dien Bien Phu and Ð Phan Dinh Phung where there are about a dozen local restaurants scattered on both sides of the street. Barbecued meats, seafood hotpots and simple vegetables, it’s all here.

Night Market
The night market is one of the most atmospheric (and affordable) places to dine in Duong Dong. There are a dozen or more stalls serving a delicious range of Vietnamese seafood, grills and vegetarian options.

D
Buddy Ice Cream
This ice-cream shop and information centre is a good stop for budget travellers looking for free internet or impartial advice. The New Zealand ice cream is great, plus there are pizzas, sausages and more.

A wide range of Vietnamese favourites here, plus an upstairs terrace to catch a breeze.

Cappuccino
This Italian restaurant may not look that stylish but looks can be deceiving, as the menu features some delicious dishes at absurdly affordable prices. Pastas, risottos, pizzas, plus US$4 mains such as veal escalope with mushroom sauce. Oh and did we mention the Mexican and Vietnamese food, plus the tempting tiramisu?

Hao Ai
Set in lush landscaped gardens, this attractive island restaurant does a roaring trade with tour groups exploring the delta by boat. There are enough pavilions for independent travellers to hide away and generous set menus are available for two or more. Get here by hiring a private boat from Ben Tre or My Tho.

G
Bassac Restaurant
The most sophisticated dining experience in Chau Doc is here at the Victoria Chau Doc Hotel. The menu includes some delightfully presented Vietnamese food, as well as a wonderful selection of international dishes to make the mouth water. Desserts are devilish or there is more simple fare at the Bamboo Bar.

Sao Hom
Set in the (now upmarket) former market, Sao Hom has an atmospheric riverside setting. The menu includes Vietnamese, international and some fusion dishes, including crispy spring rolls for a change and some tandoori dishes. It is very popular at lunch and remains one of Can Tho’s most alluring spots.

Le Bistrot
Tucked away on an atmospheric lane, this French garden restaurant offers French home cooking at a distinctly Vietnamese price, making it a great place. The menu includes some Italian and Vietnamese dishes, plus French cheeses and profiteroles. It stays open late as a lively bar with pool table.

Mekong Rest Stop
About 8km west of town, this complex includes a thatched-roof restaurant and some of the best bathrooms this side of Ho Chi Minh City. While it serves a good assortment of fresh seafood and traditional dishes amid the lush gardens, it does get overrun with tour groups passing through the delta.

Bay Bong
It doesn’t look like much, but the food is really something. According to Mekong explorer Le Van Sinh, it’s the best in the delta, specialising in hotpots and soups, as well as fresh fish dishes. Try the ca kho to (stewed fish in a clay pot) or canh chua (sweet-and-sour soup).

Valentine
Don’t be put off by the fancy interior, which looks more like a classic karaoke spot, with faux brickwork and pink, heart-covered columns, as the food here is very reasonably priced. It is one of the few menus in town with Western food on offer, including a passable spag bol for 25,000d.

Nam Bo
When it comes to setting, this restaurant has it, housed in an elegantly restored shophouse overlooking the river. The menu offers well-presented Vietnamese dishes as well as some affordable international offerings or you can just sit on the terrace and enjoy a glass of wine.

Thanh Thuy Christian
This goat-meat specialty restaurant serves traditional curried goat or if you’re feeling a bit lively, try the goat-scrotum hotpot. The restaurant is a few kilometres out of town. Look for the sign on your left, just beyond the junction with Ð Tran Hoang Na.

Lam Hung Ky
There’s a strip of Chinese restaurants on Chi Lang, including the busy Lam Hung Ky, complete with the usual strung-up ducks and chickens. It serves good food, despite the menu offering misleadingly unappetising items like ‘instant boiled assorted meats’.

Hai Au
An expensive restaurant by local standards, it is worth the investment for the great location on the side of the Cai Lon River. Choose from an air-con interior or the livelier terrace. Seafood is popular, including crayfish and crab. Free wi-fi on tap.

Long Bo
This is a bit of a legend among Chau Doc locals, a grilled meat restaurant offering such delights as bo lui xa (beef wrapped around lemongrass). Cook it yourself on the hot coals brought to your table. It’s 1km west of the Temple of Lady Xu.

Quan Oc 283
This is the place to come for a bargain seafood barbecue. Point at the platters out the front, piled high with clams, scallops, mussels and snails, or venture behind to the tanks of live fish, crab and shrimp. Busting with locals and lots of beer.

Mekong
Located directly opposite the Victoria Chau Doc Hotel, this restaurant has a large covered section or an outdoor area in front of the gracefully decaying old villa. A good spot for Vietnamese greatest hits at affordable prices.

Quan Com 16
This long-running place is a bit of a Can Tho institution with locals. It has relocated down the road, but thankfully the recipe remains the same: piles of freshly cooked fish, meat and vegetable dishes and fast service.

-
San Vuon
This place is a peaceful retreat from the downtown bustle and is set amid extensive gardens. The sizeable menu includes the usual panoply of dishes such as frog and rat or the more conventional grilled beef or chicken.

Ocean Bar & Grill
This is a tiny little tapas bar-grill located on the main road into town. The bites are light, so mix and match, but know well that the wine selection is the best in town thanks to the attached winestore.
