Accommodation prices on Phu Quoc yo-yo up and down depending on the season and the number of visitors in town. The variations are more extreme than anywhere else in Vietnam, but tend to affect budget and midrange places more than the high-end resorts. Some places will treble their prices for the peak season of December and January. Bookings are essential at this time. Across all of the budget categories you’ll get less for your money than you’d expect for the price.

This smart resort features 98 rooms in villas or bungalows, most with views over the beach. The sprawling complex includes a disco, karaoke rooms, spa, minigolf, tennis courts and petanque courts. Check the website for seasonal deals.
There’s a mixture of hotel blocks and bungalows in this sprawling, lemon-and-lime beachfront complex. The wide concrete paths and occasional concrete tree suggest that it’s targeted mainly to locals.
Next door to the Saigon-Phu Quoc, this is one of the biggest resorts on the island with bungalows, a huge pool and a long beachfront.
Run by a friendly family with a coterie of cheeky dogs, Bamboo Cottages has Vung Bau Beach largely to itself. The focal point is a big, open-sided restaurant and bar, with the beach at its doorstep.
Competing for the title of the most upmarket resort on the island, Chen Sea has attractive villas with deep verandas, designed to resemble ancient terracotta-roofed houses. A large pool faces the resort’s beautiful sandy beach.
A new bungalow resort with some beachfront access; the rustic bungalows are good value. It was very much a work in progress during our visit, with no garden for shade, but the beach bar has quickly earnt a name for itself as a lively hang-out.

A little out of the way, overlooking a small pond near the beach, this small place is very good value. The fan-cooled bungalows come in a variety of shapes and sizes and all include a bathroom and fridge.
This place doesn’t look that glamorous, but it’s good value and fronts the beach.
On a lovely beachfront, the attractive brick bungalows are set in a leafy garden dotted with swaying palms and clumps of bamboo. Rooms are well furnished and the popular Rainbow Bar is located here on the beach.
A boutique-style resort on Long Beach, the rooms have handsome furnishings and are set amid a flourishing garden. Some include a pool view or sea view, plus there is a pretty garden restaurant with beachside tables.
This hotel is on the main drag near Long Beach and is a reliable overspill option when the beach is heaving.
For the time being, this is one of the only places to stay on this lovely beach. My Lan has charming if rustic bungalows with wood floors, thatch roof and cold-water showers.
Resist the urge to break into ‘Club Tropicana drinks are free…’ as this is no Wham-style Club Med. It’s a lovely tropical hideaway with a good range of rooms and bungalows.
One of several sparklingly new minihotels on the main road into town, Huyn Tham has clean, comfortable rooms, some with views over the water.
This chilled retreat, run by an English-Vietnamese couple, is a great place to escape the bustle of the main drag. The tightly grouped bungalows are well kept and spacious if simple.
A fun and friendly place to stay, the management have a quirky sense of humour but definitely know how to look after their guests.
Consistently one of the best-value places on Phu Quoc, it even resists the temptation to whack up its rates in the high season.
The charm of this traditionally styled place, set back from the beach, would be more pronounced if the rooms were better maintained and if the staff had more of it.
Set around a small cove accessed from a dusty road through a mango orchard, this ecofriendly resort uses solar panels and organic and recycled building materials. The bungalows all include a private terrace.
Next door to Le Bistrot, these bungalows are a great deal, but the owner doesn’t always honour bookings.
Almost next door to the Duong Dong, this is a major hotel-resort which includes a number of solid beachfront bungalows and a swimming pool.
This plain but friendly hotel is a good fallback option. It has clean, modern, sizeable rooms, some with sea views.
