    Brazos is Houston's best independent bookstore where all your fiction and non-fiction needs will be met. They specialise in literature and poetry in particular with authors often dropping by for readings and signings.

  2. Galleria

    A huge conglomeration of shops collides in and near the mazelike Galleria, off I-610. Macy's, Foley's and Nordstrom anchor more than 375 mall stores, and there's even an ice-skating rink.

  3. Heights

    The Heights, Houston's first neighborhood, is filled with Arts and Crafts bungalows. Browse 19th St (between Yale and Shepherd) for unique antiques, clever crafts, artsy furniture - anything out of the common way. The first Saturday of every month the street takes a carnival-like air with outdoor booths and entertainment. North of I-10, Waugh Dr turns into Heights Blvd.

    This is a great place to pick up all manner of eclectic, well-organised secondhand goods, including great Texas mementos like cowboy boots and belt buckles. Some items have spent too many nights on the prairie but the shelves are guaranteed to hold a few hidden treasures.
