Restaurants in Idaho

  1. Bittercreek Ale House

This restaurant has lively sidewalk patios, intimate environs and lots of personality. They also serve wholesome, usually locally produced food with an emphasis on sustainable growth. The nouveau American menu at Bittercreek features a good selection of vegetarian options (it does organic Idaho black bean burgers on request). Order one of the whiskey cocktails made using an old-fashioned preprohibition-era recipe. Try the bourbon sour with lemon, whiskey, egg whites and sugar (c 1860). The Red Feather is slightly more upscale, and does delicious wood-oven pizza and a set three-course menu for two (per person $23).

  2. Rickshaw

This supercool painted shack just off Main St does delicious tapas. The menu is Asian fusion - creative, fresh small plates inspired by the cuisine of Vietnam, Thailand, China and Indonesia, which the chef refers to as 'Asian street food.' Be careful how much you order. Most portions are small, and it's easy to spend a fortune before you feel stuffed. The exception is the special Friday lunch menu, when full meals cost less than $10.

  3. Piehole

For cheap pizza by the slice and an ice-cold Pabst, you can't beat this Boise dive. There are four loaded pizza slice specials each day (along with the usual assortment of made-to-order pies). These rotate, but always include unique topping combos.
