Sitka Restaurants

  1. Back Door Café

The town's best coffeehouse; accessed through either Old Harbor Books on Lincoln St or through the…you guessed it…which is off Barracks St. The cruise-ship hordes parading endlessly down Lincoln St can't immediately see it so they go elsewhere. As a result, the small place is full but not packed, and it's as local as it gets. The pleasant young staff members serve an eclectic clientele with a menu that includes great baked goods, bagel sandwiches and excellent high-octane espresso drinks.

  5. Ludvig's Bistro

Sitka's newest restaurant is also its best. Inside Ludvig's is as colorful as the commercial fishing district that surrounds it and European-quaint. There are only seven tables and a handful of stools at a brass-and-blue-tile bar. The women who run it describe their menu as 'rustic Mediterranean fare' and it is by far the most innovative cooking in Sitka. Their Katlian Special is whatever the local boats catch that day then pan-seared with a hint of smoke from Sitka alder.

  9. Victoria's
